Who actually hires a photographer for their dating profile photos?
A lot of people, actually. The surprising truth is that it is becoming extremely common for people to hire someone to help them with their online dating profile. And it makes sense, doesn't it? Online dating is booming, and more people than ever are flocking to dating websites to find a connection. In order to make your profile stand out, and in order to attract the right kind of person, you need quality photos that represent who you are and what you want. That is a tall order, and most people aren't able to capture this without hiring a professional.
My clients are extremely diverse. They are all different ages, races, orientations, income levels, etc. The common theme is that the people that hire me are serious about getting the most out of online dating.

How It Works
Once you contact me, I will send you a questionnaire that will help me get more of an idea of who you are and what types of people you are looking to connect with.
Next, we will set up a phone consultation. During your consultation we will get to know each other and what you are looking for. We will discuss locations, outfits, and other styling details. We will book a date, time, and location. I usually book shoots in the first or last two hours of daylight on a Saturday or Sunday.
How It Works
Once you contact me, you will receive a questionnaire to complete that will help me get more of an idea of who you are and what types of people you are looking to connect with.
Next, we will set up a phone consultation. During your consultation we will get to know each other and what you are looking for. We will discuss locations, outfits, and other styling details (don't stress if you don't have ideas- I can help with that).
We will book a date, time, and location. I usually book shoots in the first or last two hours of daylight on Saturdays.
Before the shoot, you will prepare your outfits and props. I will have already given you some styling advice during your consultation, but I'll be available through e-mail if you have questions or ideas before our shoot.
On the day of the shoot we will meet at our set location/locations and shoot your photos!

After the shoot I will take your photos home and select your best shots to edit.

In about three weeks, you will receive an e-mail with a link to your private online gallery. The gallery will contain the best photos from your shoot that have been edited. You will receive a license to download and use these photos as you wish, so you can immediately start uploading them to your dating profile. The photos will NOT contain any watermarking.
The final step is that you get inundated with fabulous singles wanting to date you, you meet one, you fall in love, and then you call me to book your engagement photo session. And they all lived happily ever after...

What should I wear to my shoot?
Probably, but I won't, no matter how much you pay me. That would totally defeat the purpose of online dating. I've been helping people find love online for many years, and I've never known anyone who got a second date after falsely portraying themselves online. Yes, you want flattering pictures of yourself, but you want pictures that actually look like you. You don't want potential matches to be surprised (in a bad way) when they meet you in person and the IRL you doesn't match the online you. Buzzkill, no matter how great your personality is.
I opt for flattering photos instead of Photoshop to make you look great. Lighting, clothing, angles, and all that jazz will make you look your best. When it comes to airbrushing out wrinkles and double chins, I draw the line. If it's going to be on your face two weeks from now, it stays in the photo. We can talk about this, though, so don't stress. I want you to be happy with your photos. But ultimately, I want you to be happy with the RESULTS of your photos.
We're gonna shoot these in, like, public? SRSLY?
Yup! Outdoor lighting is the best, most flattering, and most natural-looking lighting there is. Some locations I shoot are more crowded public places because having an identifiable location in the background, like the arch, or the stadium, is a great conversation starter for online dating. People may briefly notice our photo shoot, but you will never see these people again. Just channel your inner model and pretend like they aren't there.
If you are introverted and terrified of the thought of strangers watching you get your photo taken, please let me know when you schedule your shoot. We will find some more discreet locations. I will also recommend we shoot in the morning, when most locations are a lot less crowded. The early bird catches the... best online dating photos ever.
What if it rains the day of our shoot?
Mother Nature can be unpredictable. Nine times out of ten I continue with the shoot regardless of weather, utilizing covered locations, umbrellas, etc. If the rain is a dealbreaker, we will rescheulde the shoot. Please let me know 24 hours in advance if you would like to reschedule your shoot.
I hate every photo ever taken of me. You can still help me, right?
First, I want to recognize what a huge step it is to take the plunge into online dating. I know it can be very stressful, and a large part of that for most people is the photo aspect. This is why I love specializing in this type of photography. I am good at putting people at ease during their shoots.
The biggest thing you can do to help me produce amazing images of you is to communicate with me up front. If you are usually not happy with photos you see of yourself, you need to tell me that when you book your shoot. I will ask you to send me five photos you don't like of yourself and five photos you do like and explain why. If I understand what your insecurities are before our shoot, we will have much better results.
It is really important that you understand that online dating photography is about producing images that look realistic. Your photos are going to look the way you look the day of your shoot. If you have extremely low confidence and hate the way you look, there is a chance you may not like the way you look in the photos.

We will talk in detail about this during your phone consultation. I will also send you some resources and ideas. I recommend keeping it simple and wearing clothes that make you feel good! Layers are good because they give us a lot of options without having to change your entire outfit- ditto for accessories. I also always suggest bringing two "levels" of outfits- a casual outfit and a more professional, classy outfit to convey multiple sides of your personality. Dark, solid colors tend to flatter most people, but there are no rules when it comes to dating photos. We can break all the rules and still walk away with killer photos that will get you loads of dates.
A lot of people wonder about bringing props to a shoot. Why not? An instrument, a book, a cup of coffee... It will be a conversation starter in the world of online dating.
Definitely spend time on your hair and makeup before the shoot. Some people even have it professionally done. This is totally up to you. Although I want you to look and feel your best, I say wear and style the way you would for a date. Would you have your hair and makeup professionally done before your first date? If not, probably do it yourself for our shoot.
It's also good to remember that the majority of the photos we take will be from the waist up. While an online dating shoot always includes full body shots, we focus on headshots. So focus your energy on the top half of your outfits.
What is a shoot like and where do I change outfits?
I try to make shoots as fun as possible. An online dating photo shoot is almost like going on a date itself! I will do my best to make you feel comfortable, and we will chat a lot during the shoot. This is going to help bring out the best in you and make your photos look less stiff and posed.

Throughout the shoot, you will have the chance to look at the back of my camera (in the business we call this "chimping") and see how the shoot is progressing. Some people choose not to and that's okay, but if you want to peek at what the shots are looking like so that you can make adjustments, just ask! (Note: This is not possible during COVID.)

Most of the shots I take of you will be from your waist up, but I always include some full-body shots in an online dating photo shoot, and you should definitely put at least one on your profile.

For some shots I will pose you and tell you exactly how to stand and what to do with your hands. For other shots, I use "promptography", where I will give you a prompt that will bring out a natural reaction (think "You're a lemming!" from Austin Powers).

I have a pop-up changing tent that I bring with me to all my shoots, so you can change in the parking lot of our location. Some clients also utilize public restrooms or their cars to change outfits.

I will use a variety of lenses as we walk around our location. If you have any ideas, please speak up during your shoot! I can have as much or as little creative control as you want, and I can provide as much or as little direction as you need.
Do you guarantee your work?
I stand behind my work and want you to be happy with it. If you are not satisfied with your photos because of any error on my part, please contact me immediately and I will re-shoot them within 30 days of the original shoot if they cannot be fixed.
